The Hair Dressing Biography of Frank Fowden

Frank Fowden’s Journey into hair design:

Where it all began
Born in England on 25 July 1948

Frank trained at the Vidal Sassoon school in Knightsbridge in 1968 and then worked as a stylist for one year in the Sloane Street Salon. After leaving Sassoon, Frank joined Leonards in Upper Grosvenor Street, London, where he remained for a further 9 years during which he became an artistic director. During his time a Leonard, Frank worked on numerous photographic shoots, music videos, fashion shows and movies. He has travelled extensively holding seminars and hair shows in England, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Thailand and South Africa.

Frank was brought to South Africa from London on three occasions by L’Oreal to conduct seminars around the country before relocating. Frank Relocated to Johannesburg in 1979 and in 1980 opened his first hair salon Fowden and Bailey in Rosebank, this soon became Johannesburg’s top Hair Salon. In 1996 Frank opened his own Salon in Sandton Square, from where the Frank Fowden Brand evolved.

In 1998 Frank opened his second hair salon in Cape Town’s, Waterfront.

Frank has worked with Mick Jagger Bianca Jagger, Priscilla Presley, Barbar Perkins, Marisa Berenson, Cher, Margaret Thatcher and Sharon Stone. He also worked on feature films such as Clockwork Orange, Rollerball and Barry Lyndon and worked with the Leonard artistic team of stylists styling the hair for the fashion shows of Yves St Laurent, Bill Gibb and Zandra Rhodes.

Frank Fowden Hairstylists at the V&A Waterfront – has become a landmark on the Cape Town styling map, where service and styling are equally and acutely considered. Celebrities who have stepped in for colour or a cut in the past have included Hillary Clinton, The Dutchess of York Sarah Ferguson, Colin Farrell, Arnold Schwarzenegger & family, Margaret Thatcher, Micheal Jackson and Michael Schumacher. Locally Frank has worked with most of the premier magazines and his work has featured on the covers of Fair Lady, Cosmopolitan, Darling, Rooi Rose, Style, Living and De Kat.
